DAMN I LOVE HOT CHOCOLATE! I have one recipe already on the blog. It’s called really simple hot chocolate (in many ways) and it’s really good. But today my friends, we go fully in health mode.
That is why this protein packed vegan hot chocolate includes one weird ingredient - pinto beans. Hello? Are you still here?
Uf, I am glad you are. Because it won’t disappoint! The combo of coconut milk and beans creates an amazingly rich texture.
So let’s start with this simple treat!

The recipe above can serve you as a base for hot chocolate, which is delicious as it is :) BUT! Here are some ideas what to add to it to make it with a twist.
- Different sweetener - instead of dates you can also use raisins, banana, persimmon …
- Different flavors - add some coffee to it for a espresso flavor or add nutmeg, cloves and star anise to make it more aromatic.
- Different toppings - from whipped plant-based cream to roasted seeds. Jam? Fresh fruit? Pomegranate? Mmmm.
ALSO! I don’t know what consistency of hot chocolate you are used to but I like it super thick. If you want it to be more like a hot cocoa - just add more coconut milk and a bit less beans. Easy peasy.
